About us

An alkaline specialist, by choice

Founded in 2023 and operating one processing facility in Phoenix, Arizona. We do one stream, and we do it well.

Why alkaline

Most of the battery recycling industry has moved toward lithium and electric vehicle packs, which is where the attention and the capital have gone. That left the single largest battery stream by unit count, ordinary household alkaline cells, with fewer and fewer real outlets.

Critical Materials Recovery was founded in 2023 by Rob Mattson and Jesse McCullough to be that outlet. Ijaz joined as a shareholder in late 2025. We are a specialist rather than a generalist, and that focus shows up in our pricing, our sorting and how much of each load we recover.

What we recover, & why it matters

A spent alkaline battery is mostly steel, zinc, manganese and brass. Three of the materials we recover appear on the US Department of Energy's critical materials list. Recovering them domestically means less of that demand met by imported primary material.

Certifications & what we hold

We believe in being direct about this, because procurement teams check. Here is exactly where we stand:

  • EPA identification number.

    Registered and current.

  • Stormwater conditional no exposure certificate.

On file for our Phoenix facility.

  • Environmental and standard commercial insurance.

In place; certificates available on request.

  • An EHS management system built on ISO principles.

    Documented and in use.

  • CMR is not R2 certified and not ISO certified.

Both are on our roadmap. We would rather tell you that plainly than let a logo imply otherwise.

How we work

Three things we hold to

One building

Material does not get brokered on to a third facility. It arrives in Phoenix and is processed in Phoenix. That makes the custody record short and verifiable.

Say the real number

We publish recovery figures we can support with our own mass balance, and we qualify them. No round numbers chosen because they sound good.

Answer the phone

We are small enough that the person who quotes your load is the person who can tell you where it is. That is not a slogan, it is just how it works here.
